From Chris C. Chan.
I told the members of Chi Alpha about One Day Without Shoes and gave them fliers with more information. I also emailed everyone I knew to consider going barefoot for the day. Some folks (Woo and Karen) walked around the Georgia Tech campus all day without shoes. Many got my email and went barefoot as much as possible, culminating in a night of shoelessness when we met together. I was unable to get photos of people going with shoes during the day, but was able to capture our groups bare feet at night!
Karen wanted to share some of her thoughts as she went shoeless…
- being embarassed that my feet smelled (so tucking them under my legs, sitting indian style)
- worried that my feet were dirty and would make my shoes dirty (so I wanted to wash my feet before putting on my shoes)
- feeling carefree and happy when I first took off my shoes (I was just sitting down in the grass), so it was still “fun” (but not a lifestyle)
- immediately putting on shoes once it got disgusting (as Moo said, entering the lab, or walking the streets from MCC)
- seeing some people without shoes only when sitting down (so when not using their feet) but not throughout the day; when asked if they did it the whole day, they said, “Of course not, think of all the diseases…”
- saw some chalked signs on Tech campus
- trying to clean my feet afterwards and it took a while to get the black dirt off my feet, it took a couple of scrubbings (and this was only a few hours)
- again, feeling embarassed about my smelly feet so hard to focus/pay attention at first … btu then eventually forgot about it
- actually, I know someone else felt conscious because they later put on socks
- having to choose carefully where I walked, and how I walked (paid more attention to ground)
